The idea of the Africa & African-American Studies program sponsoring an immersion experience for faculty originates with a program I heard about at the AACU meeting in 2016. Designing an experience that builds on the complex black history in our area makes sense from multiple perspective. The faculty I reached out to for this program come from a variety of disciplines, but my estimation is that their classes and research can align. I'm hoping this experience creates new links between our campus and these local spaces.
I had an interesting time at the AAC&U conference in Washington, DC. Along with colleagues from Furman College and the University of Richmond, I was able to put a spotlight on the ways a liberal arts education is "the" tool young people need for the 21st century. More on that later, but you can catch snapshots of my presentation and other happens via my storify story above.
