The 100: Gabe Jones
Gabe Jones as depicted in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1 (May 1963). Art by Jack Kirby.
Gabe Jones is one of the earliest black comic book characters. Appearing in 1963 as a member of Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos, Jones was one of the supporting characters who reflected America's broad coalition. This character fit within Jack Kirby’s vision of racial egalitarianism. He wrote Gabe as one of many racially and culturally distinct “others” who worked together in support of the American Dream.
