An Afrofuturist Age

The end of the semester and summer work have overlapped. I’ve been doing a lot, but have not had the chance to sit down and write it all out. I do think the amazing Afrofuturism Roundtable I moderated for NYC Live Arts Festival is worth special note.

This is was a unique opportunity to capture one part of broader cultural conversation about Afrofuturism. I realize the opportunity to have these conversations are happening more and more in the mainstream and the that fact is exciting and challenging. As the intersections between speculation and liberation are more sharply defined by institutions, what is and is not Afrofuturist is sure to become a topic of debate. My own work charting comic book Afrofuturism is a part of this process, but I’m mindful of the dangers of erasure and the need to recognize the hidden practice that has given Afrofuturism it social weight. There is more to be said on this topic.
